I just got word today that one of my fellow Rag Tag Rangers, Doug Knowles, passed away. He died sometime in 2019. Doug hiked many miles with us in the 1990’s and early 2000’s. He was from one of the suburbs of Baltimore, MD. It may have been Reisterstown, I’m not sure.

Doug had two nephews named Josh and Mic that used to come along on our hikes. I hope that they are still doing stuff in the outdoors. One of the many amazing things about Doug is that, at one point, he took a contracting job in Minnesota. However, when a good backpacking trip came along he would drive all the way from MN to join us. And he would sometimes arrive at our campsite in the middle of the night, hike with us, then drive about 1,300 miles back in order to get to work on Monday morning.

The last time that Doug hiked with us was at the Laurel Fork Wilderness, WV in 2003. He had a dry humor and he and I would always be the slowest hikers in the group. There are now five of the seven original Rag Tag Rangers left. You can read about our first hike together

Here.

Rest in peace, my friend.
