This RV campout was at Small Country Campground, Louisa, VA. It was sponsored by:
and was hosted by Steve and Donna Fox
Sometimes things don’t always work out for the best. With all of the rain lately I not only wasn’t able to hike much. I also did not have time to get all of our RV called The Breeze washed in time for our trip. So I washed the front, the back, the awning and trim as well as the wheels on the passenger side. That would have to do.
Thursday, May 16, 2024- I had pre-packed a number of items into the RV over the past few days so there wasn’t a lot to pack today. We left at around 11:00 AM and drove to Food Lion to pick up ice and other last minute staples. Julie followed me in her vehicle. I can’t “toad” anymore because I had a rusting issue on my previous vehicle. The towbar got completely rusted due to a long term coolant leak. I would have had to spend about $2,000 to get everything replaced. So we have had to drive two separate vehicles for awhile.
We got on the road by 12 noon, stopped at Yoders County Market near Madison, VA. If you have bever been there, GO NOW! We then made it to Small Country Campground around 2:30 PM. We noticed that they had made many enhancements to the property. The campstore was bigger and better laid out and the bathhouses had new paneling and fixtures. Both places had that speckled floor that you see in garages. It looked good.
Once at our campsite I started the setup process of connecting the electricity, water and sewer lines to the RV as well as deploying the awning. It was a beautiful day out, temps in the 70’s. But it felt very hot while I was prepping the RV. Then, when I went inside, I almost passed out going up the stairs into the RV. Julie asked me if I was OK. I said that I was but I really wasn’t. For awhile now, I have had issues with a scratchy throat at night when sleeping. I usually just pop a cough drop, go back to sleep and all’s well. But today I noticed that my throat was actually sore. So I laid on the bed for a bit and then told Julie that I didn’t feel good.
I think Julie knew what was wrong from my symptoms. I was coughing, had a sore throat and was nauseated. I told her to let everyone know that I wasn’t well and that I wouldn’t be participating in the group activities. So she spent most of the day outside and away from me because she couldn’t afford to be sick from work. i don’t blame her.
That night was rough. We tried to get as far away as possible from each other. However, in a 24 foot RV, that is not totally doable. Julie ended up sleeping in the captain’s chair in the front of the RV. And I slept in the bed in the rear. Neither of us slept well. I could feel fluid in my lungs as I was breathing that night. I wondered if this is what killed so many people with COVID?
Friday, May 17, 2024- Since neither of us got much sleep Julie talked about going home on Friday. I said OK with me as I knew that she was worried about catching what I had. So she left and I stayed behind. I told others in our group (from far away) that I was sick and would not be involved in any group activities. I took it easy that day and just chilled.
Saturday, May 18, 2024- It rained like crazy during the night. I couldn’t get any outdoor RV tear down procedures done until the rain stopped at 9:00 AM. A number of members in our group have dogs and were walking them around the campground. I told them (from far away) that I was leaving early because I didn’t feel well. They all said to get well. Before I go further, here are the pro’s and con’s of this campground:
Pros- The full hook up rates were reasonable at $63 for Thursday and $70.00 for Friday and Saturday nights, many campground improvements, friendly staff.
Cons- Verizon cell service 1 bar or less. We had to use the Wi-Fi, which was good but slow, the local channels didn’t work on the cable and we lost the Saturday night stay rate of $70.00 since I got sick.
I’ll give this campground 4 stars. I left around 9:30 AM and got home around 11:30 AM. The rain started up again. There were a number of accidents as well as clowns on the way home. I came within inches of rearending a stopped Lincoln Continental. I also came across a vehicle that went into the woods. The towtruck operators were trying to figure out how to extricate it. And my cell phone started rebooting and freezing over and over again. This was while I was navigating back roads between Louisa and Culpeper, VA. I guess that Waze and the Music Player app that I have don’t like each other.
When I got home Julie made me take a COVID test. It was positive. So I am now confined to home until this passes. As I said above, sometimes, things don’t work out for the best. Rain and COVID made it a not so good weekend. But I survived.
