Whether you’re an outdoors person or not, if you have ever visited a national park in the United States, you probably have come away with a sense of awe and an emotional attachment to that park. If you have visited more than one national park, you probably have a favorite. I have only been to two national parks in my lifetime: Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains. I backpacked the AT through both of them. They are both awesome. But my favorite is Shenandoah.
The reasons for my liking Shenandoah the best are many. My first wife and I spent our honeymoon there. I ran a Radio Shack store and lived in Front Royal, VA, where the northern entrance to SNP is located, for about seven years, I have stayed in both lodges, camped in all three campgrounds, hiked about 99% of the trails in the northern section, about 50% of the trails in the central section and about 25% of the trails in the southern section. I am well versed in the history of this park and have many fond memories of it.
So when I got National Park Posters as an advertiser on my website, I immediately ordered a poster of Shenandoah National Park. I also got a poster promoting all national parks. I even got to converse with the artist Rob Decker via email during this process. He studied under the famous photographer Ansel Adams, whose black and white photographs of national parks in the western U.S. are legiondary. He has visted all national parks, taken some beautiful images, enhanced them and now sells them in the form of posters, artist proofs, collections, canvas prints, postcards and stickers.
The website for National Park Posters features close to 100 posters for sale. These posters are based on 1930’s WPA era posters that were designed to generate interest in U.S. national parks. These posters retail for $40.00 each and there are discounts for multiple purchases. The website also offers artist proofs, which go for $60.00, collections of posters from various parks, which range from $60.00 to $140.00, canvas prints of these posters, which start at $229.00, postcards, which range from $20.00 to $72.00 and stickers, which range from $3.95 on up. These prices are as of 06/16/2025 and are subject to change.
The posters that I received were 13 x 19 inches. They were well packaged and looked good when I got them. I went to that arts & crafts store that has the same name as my first name and bought a nice frame there for around $15.00. The only issue that I had was that the SNP poster was about 1/16 of an inch too long on the right side. So I had to place the National Park poster over it, draw a line where it’s right border was, and then cut it. The poster then fit very well within the frame. I did have a mishap when placing the glass back into the frame. One has to gently push it back into the front of the frame. I guess I pushed too hard as the glass broke. So I will have to buy a new frame. Other than that, the poster looks great.
When looking at this poster, it brings back a lot of memories. Like hiking from US 340 Royal AVE in Front Royal, VA up the Dickey Ridge Trail (about 5 miles up, 5 miles back) to the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center, eating multiple egg sandwiches (with meat) while backpacking the AT at the Elkwallow Wayside, Seeing a bear near Skyland Lodge, staying at the Rock Springs Hut and not getting much sleep, enjoying the view at Hawksbill Mountain, having a beer with fellow hikers Charlie Johnson and Bill Isham at the tap room at Big Meadows Lodge, driving the length of Skyline Drive and doing day hikes with the Take A Hike Group at various locations within the park. They all are occasions that I will never forget. And everytime that I look at this poster, it will bring back these and other memories.
