Please patronize our advertisers. This 4.5 mile loop day hike occurred on August 21, 2024. It was my cousin Ron Calabrese and myself on this one.
I met Ron at the Sawmill Area of Sweet Run State park at around 8:15 AM. It was a beautiful, crisp morning. The temps were in the low 50’s when we started this hike and would be in the low 70’s when we ended it. It was a great day for a hike!
We did the following trails within this park: Upper Sweet Run, Arnold LA, Old Bridge, Farmstead Loop, Piney Run, Arnold, Woodthrush, Butterfly Alley, Bypass and Lower Sweet Run. Like the last time that I was here the trails were well maintained and the signing was excellent. There were some slight ups along the way but overall, this loop was fairly easy to hike.

Ron and I talked about various things throughout this hike. We both recently purchased “newer” vehicles, we both have contract, part time, temp or gig economy jobs and we both take naps like most “old farts” do. Ron and I are the same age.
We didn’t see any animals on this trip. We didn’t see any other hikers either. We only took one break at the intersection of the Arnold and Woodthrush Trails. And we were done with this hike around 11:15 AM. I got home around 1:00 PM. I thought that this was a good hike.
Now, I plan to come back here once more to hike the Butterfly Alley Trail up to the AT. I hiked the section that this trail intersects in 2000 with fellow hiker Charlie Johnson. I am not sure of the name of this mountain. Also, I’m not certain of the elevation change between the Sawmill Area Parking lot and the AT. I am estimating that to be between 350 and 400 feet within a mile. Once I do this, I will have done most of the trails within this park.
