I’ve utilized many, many types of tent lights over the years. Some have worked well. Some haven’t. Today I’ll be discussing the features and benefits of the Snow Peak Rechargeable Mini Hozuki in Morning Mist tent light. I’ll talk about the Snow Peak Company, it’s history and products and then I will go onto discuss this product. I’ll even set up one of my tents and see how this light does in the dark.
Snow Peak was founded in 1958 by Yukio Yamai. Yamai founded a climbing equipment company that would become Snow Peak, creating his own line of mountaineering products. The company is still based in Tsubame-Sanjo, Japan.
Over the next few decades, Snow Peak continued its successful evolution. They added camping gear in the 1980’s, established a presence in the United States in 1999, then added apparel in 2014. Their US headquarters is in Portland, OR. Snow Peak is furthering its footprint in the USA with new retail, food, beverage, and hospitality expansions.
Now for the product. I used Google Translate to see what Hozuki translated to. Google Translate said it translated to “I like preservation”. This light is only 3.35 ounces. It has a built in rechargeable battery and has variable brightness settings of Hi, Lo, Strobe and Flicker. It has a USB-C charging port. It will give you 60 hours of light at the Hi settings and 100 hours of light at the lo setting. The loop attachment is magnetic so it attaches and/or detaches easily.
One could use this light as an overhead tent light, a handheld light, a next to your bed at home reading light. Wherever you need light. It comes in three different colors. Charging time out of the box was less than an hour.
I set up one of my tents on my deck to test how this product does as a tent light. I placed it in my tent and threaded the plastic ball on top through the lantern loop on the inside roof of my tent. That ball on the end of the light was rather large and I had a tough time threading it through the loop. But I eventually got it through.
Next, I took an image of the tent from the outside. It looked well lit up. Then, I took an image of the roof of the tent from the inside. The light was nice and bright. One could dim the light more by pressing the globe on the light itself.
Finally, I tried using this product as a flashlight. It did a great job and lit up the woods behind my house.
I think that the Mini Hozuki is a great tent lamp and I can’t wait to take it out on the trail next year. As a suggestion, take along a long twist tie in case the ball at the end of the top of the light does not fit through the loop at the top of your tent. And download one of those magnifier apps onto your phone to read the very small print on the instruction sheet.
